Creamy, Dreamy Beetroot Latte

This winter is probably going to be a long one. Not because winter is inherently long here in Canada – we get about 6 months of it at a minimum each year – but because with all that’s going on with COVID, it might just feel longer than usual.

As winter is approaching my goal has been to embrace it, actively find ways I can enjoy it (cross-country skiing here I come!), and revel in all the comfort foods and beverages that will warm me up, and nourish me from the inside out including this creamy, dreamy blender beetroot latte!

Is a Beetroot Latte Caffeine Free?

I am not a coffee drinker. I used to be mildly (I’d have a coffee once a week or so), but for the past decade I have barely drank coffee besides the odd decaf almond milk latte.

Caffeine and me just don’t jive well. I turn into a jittery mess and don’t find any enjoyable energy from drinking it. That being said, I still love warm comforting drinks in the colder months so I have often gone with tea or my super healthy hot chocolate.

The beauty with beetroot lattes is that they are caffeine free! The star ingredient beet powder doesn’t contain any caffeine and neither do the other ingredients I add in to this delicious drink. If you are a fan of coffee and are looking for that caffeine kick, you can definitely add it to this latte (I explain how in the recipe card!).

Without the caffeine this drink is suitable for both adults and kids alike, and because it’s packed with nutritious ingredients, you can feel like you are enjoying a cup-of-jo but with added nutritional benefits!

The flavour of the beetroot in the latte is very subtle and with the combination of ingredients, this dreamy latte is slightly sweet, wonderfully creamy, and earthy tasting.

Health Benefits of Beetroot and Beet Powder

The star ingredient in this latte is obviously the beetroot. For the recipe I use a beetroot powder (that contains only 100% whole beet powder) rather than raw or cooked beetroot. While I have seen recipes that use whole beetroot, I prefer the powder for ease (no cooking or preparing of a beet needed and no dyed pink hands!).

Both whole beetroot and beetroot powder have great health benefits including:

  • Improved circulation in the body
  • Better exercise endurance and recovery time
  • Supports heart health
  • Contains betalains (a natural plant compound) which helps to reduce inflammation
  • Contains antioxidants that can help prevent diseases

Ingredients in the Beetroot Latte

To make this delicious beverage you only need a handful of simple ingredients which can be purchased at most grocery stores or you may already have in your fridge and pantry! You can find the beetroot powder on Amazon or at most health food stores or bulk stores. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Beetroot powder (only beetroot, no added ingredients or latte blends)
  • Pure vanilla extract
  • Pitted dates
  • Almond butter (natural, unsweetened)
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Almond or cashew milk (unsweetened)
  • Collagen peptides (optional, not for vegans)
  • Optional: A shot of espresso for my coffee drinkers out there!

The ingredients in this latte bring in healthy fats and protein from the almond butter, antioxidants from the beet powder, fibre and natural sweetness from the dates, and vitamin E from the almond milk.

While I chose to add collagen into the mix for an extra dose of protein and the benefits it has on gut health, hair, skin, and nails, you can definitely omit this ingredient if you are vegan!

How To Make a Beetroot Latte in the Blender

When it comes to preparation I made sure to keep this very simple. All you’ll need to do is:

  1. Heat almond milk using a Milk Steamer/Frother (or heat it on the stovetop)
  2. Add all ingredients and steamed milk (reserving the foam) to a high speed blender.
  3. Blend until smooth then pour into a mug and top with foam.

That’s it! Easy, peasy.

Have you ever tried a beetroot latte? I’d love to know what you like to put in yours. Tell me about it in the comments and be sure to pin the photo below the recipe to save this one for later!
