Without a shadow of a doubt, the best and most worthwhile activity in Hogwarts Legacy’s open world are the Merlin Trials. And this is for one simple and obvious very reason: storage.

Yes, that’s right, thanks to the Merlin Trials and the Exploration Challenges, it means that for every milestone you hit, the more gear storage you get. And the more gear storage you get, the more loot you can carry. And the more loot you can carry, the more you can sell. The more you can sell, the more money you get. It’s capitalism at its finest.

There are 95 Merlin Trials to complete, in all, and because it's incredibly important, we’ve created a load of handy region maps for you to use.

There are various different types of Merlin Trials, but once you know how each of the trial types works, you'll blitz through them in no time. The following are the various different Merlin Trials you can encounter:

• Platforming Trials - where you have to jump from pillar to pillar.
• Destruction Trials - where you have to destroy a number of pillars (say, using Confringo).
• Basic Casting Trials - where you use your Basic Cast to destroy small spheres.
• Flipendo Trials - where you have to flip cubes around with Flipendo to match the symbols on the cube with the symbols on the pillars.
• Wingardium Leviosa Trials - where you have to move objects (like a large spherical boulder, or a bunch of small spherical boulders) into recesses.
• Butterfly Trials - which work a lot like the butterfly doors. If there's a crystal in a pillar, it's a Butterfly Trial, so all you need is Lumos (the butterflies are actually glowing green butterflies here though).
• Timed Fire Trials - where you have to light a series of braziers in a short amount of time.
• Reparo Trials - where you have to repair broken objects.
