The Most Important Slime Ingredients

The key slime ingredients are the glue and the slime activator which in this case is eye drops. Our dollar store has been selling a name brand glue for some time now. What you are looking for is a washable PVA school glue.

The slime activator in this slime kit is eye drops from the dollar store. The key ingredients should include boric acid and sodium borate. They had several to choose from but only one had both these ingredients.

I tried two of our favorite basic slime recipes, fluffy slime and stretchy saline slime! The recipes are slightly different here, so I will list the steps below. You can also find printable recipe cards at the bottom of this page to add to your kit.

How To Make Dollar Store Slime

Of course, I had to make sure the recipes worked! We made two slimes pretty quickly. Check each one out below. I halved our original recipes and it made a great amount for having fun without wasting supplies!

Recipe 1: Stretchy Slime With Eye Drops

This slime recipe is fun and stretchy! You get a great ooze and a good stretch!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 Cup White PVA Washable School Glue
  • 1 TBL Eye Drops
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/4-1/2 TSP Baking Soda
  • Food coloring, glitter, sequins all optional!

Instructions:

  1. Put glue in a mixing bowl and add water. Stir well to combine.
  2. Add glitter and food coloring as desired. Mix well.
  3. Stir in baking soda completely.
  4. Pour in eye drops and mix well until slime forms and you can no longer stir easily
  5. Knead well and play! Store in a clean dry container

TIP: Put some of the eye drop solution on your hands before picking up slime to knead it. It will help with the initial stickiness. As you knead your homemade slime it becomes less sticky. If the slime is still overly sticky add a drop or two of the eye drops.

Recipe 2: Fluffy Slime

Fluffy slime is light as a cloud and has an amazing texture that you can still achieve with dollar store slime ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups of Foam Shaving Cream (we overflow the cups)
  • 1/4 Cup White PVA Washable School Glue
  • 1 TBL Eye Drops
  • 1/4-1/2 TSP Baking Soda
  • Food coloring

Instructions:

  1. Put the shaving cream in a large bowl.
  2. Mix in food coloring if desired and mix slowly.
  3. Add glue to shaving cream and stir well to combine.
  4. Stir in baking soda completely.
  5. Pour in eye drops and mix well until a big fluffy slime blob forms and you can’t really stir any longer.
  6. Knead well and play! Store in a clean dry container.

SAME TIP: Put some of the eye drop solution on your hands before picking up slime to knead it. It will help with the initial stickiness. As you knead your homemade slime it becomes less sticky. If the slime is still overly sticky add a drop or two of the eye drops.

There you have it! Two awesome dollar store slime recipes that actually work. Keep in mind that sometimes slime making takes practice. The biggest reason for slime fails is not reading through the recipe! People contact me all the time with: “Why didn’t this work?”

Most of the time the answer has been lack of attention to supplies needed, reading the recipe, and actually measuring the ingredients! So give it a try and do let me know if you need some help. On a very rare occasion, I have gotten an old batch of glue, and there is no fixing that!

How To Store Slime

Slime lasts quite a while! I get a lot of questions regarding how I store my slime. We use reusable containers in either plastic or glass. Make sure to keep your slime clean and it will last for several weeks.

Fluffy slime with lose it’s fluff over time and takes up much less space in your container. Can you guess why?

If you want to send kids home with a bit of slime from a camp, party, or classroom project, I would suggest packages of reusable containers from the dollar store or grocery store or even Amazon. For large groups, we have used condiment containers and labels as seen here.
