The Portugal Euro 2024 squad has been announced, with Roberto Martinez selecting the charges he'll hope will fire the nation to glory this summer.
The Euro 2016 winners are one of the favourites at Euro 2024, thanks to their superb run in qualification and the stacks of talent at their fingertips, with Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to prove a point.
Now playing in Saudi Arabia, the legendary forward's international career looked to be over at the 2022 World Cup when he was dropped by Fernando Santos – but now he's the main man against and set to appear in his sixth European Championship as one of the favourites for the Golden Boot.
CR7 is 39 years young – but incredibly, not the oldest outfielder, with backline cruncher Pepe now 41. This is a squad with considerable experience and quality in the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernado Silva, Joao Felix, Rafel Leao, Ruben Dias and Ruben Neves, while Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, Antonio Silva and Francisco Conceicao represent younger faces getting their chance.
Former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is at the helm but there isn't too much change: the only major talking points in the selection process of this tournament were the omissions of Raphael Guerreiro and Ricardo Horta. The Euro 2024 groups have laid Portugal facing Turkey, the Czech Republic and first-time qualifiers Georgia, in a favourable three games – so there is no excuse for a poor showing at this tournament.
Ronaldo might well insist on playing until he's 50, but many of this group are in their pomp – and Portugal expects something from this new Golden Generation.

Portugal manager: Roberto Martinez
Roberto Martinez quickly made friends with his communication skills, but it is more than a charm offensive that has seduced local media and fans.
The Spanish ex- Belgium boss has not been afraid to experiment with tactics or personnel, an increasingly cohesive outfit visibly improving. He turns 51 the day before the final, too…
Portugal's star player
Bruno Fernandes
At a time when his club form has wavered, Bruno Fernandes has been consistently exceptional for his country.
The 29-year-old is the Selecao's true leader and outshines both Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix, erstwhile pretenders to Cristiano Ronaldo's crown. Portugal need that game-changing creativity to continue if they want to go deep.
Most likely to...
Bicker. If you thought that Fernandes' habit of endlessly complaining on the pitch is confined to club football, think again. Oh, and just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, Pepe continues to knock about at 41…
Least likely to...
Take themselves too seriously, at least in the case of the seriously talented Leao. The laid-back Milan wideman infuriates many, but criticism wanes when he's belting bangers into the top corner while beaming from ear to ear.
What they hope will happen
A repeat of Euro 2016. Portugal have legitimate aspirations to win the thing.
What will happen
Top their simple group and the Selecao won't take on a group winner until the semis, where the first heavyweight they face will likely be an undercooked Germany. They should reach the final.
Kits
Home
Portugal have played in deep crimson for a generation. The combination of the malbec-esque shade with green and gold has been a staple of international tournaments in the 21st Century – so this is a switch-up.The tone is very light, black is used as a secondary colour and the logos are white.
The Portugal Euro 2024 home kit is available from Nike.
Away
This is the most blue we can remember on a Portugal shirt since 1998's navy sleeves – and this is a completely different shade. Nike are signing off on something completely brand new.
Nike sells the Portugal Euro 2024 away kit.
FAQs
How many players are Portugal allowed to take to Euro 2024?
The Portugal Euro 2024 squad will feature 26 players, with UEFA having recently announced that it will stick with enlarged teams for the European Championships. Initially, UEFA wanted to reduce squads back to 23 players, but kickback from teams meant it reneged on that idea.
