The Best Front-Closure Bras to Make Getting Dressed Easier and Faster (2024)

There are a lot of reasons to love front-closure bras. They’re user-friendly, first and foremost. With a front-closure bra, you’ll never find yourself contorted, arms behind you, fussing with a clasp you can’t see. That makes them great for people of many shapes and abilities, too. They can also have a more plunging front than back-closure bras, making them great for deep-V necklines, and many also come in racer and T-back styles meaning they’re adaptable to all sorts of different garment styles and shapes.

They’re also great for those who want to embrace the exposed bra trend or who might want the support of a great, high-impact sports bra without the hassle of trying to crawl in and out of one.Front-closure bras should be an important part of every lingerie-wearer’s bra wardrobe, but it can be hard to know what the best style of bra is for any given situation. We’ve consulted experts and rounded up some of their—and our—favorite front-closure bras based on fit, size options, materials, support, and comfort.

What to Look for in Front-Closure Bras

  • Durability: Every good front-closure bra should have a strong and secure front clasp that locks, whether that’s a row of hook and eye closures or a snapping closure. Lingerie expert Gill Heer recommends that you look for a metal front closure, noting that a front-close bra with a plastic closure can break under pressure.
  • Fit: Bra fit expert Kristyn Polin notes that the front close bras that have hook and eye closures can be a bit more snug than bras with similar closures on the back, just because they tend to have more fasteners or, as she puts it, “multiple columns to close on.” Heer says a good rule of thumb is that, “the middle of the bra (the “gore”) should sit flat on your sternum. The bra straps should rest comfortably on your shoulders and not dig, and your breast should fit comfortably within the bra cup with no spillage.”

FAQ

  • Are front-closure bras good for large breasts?

Front-closure bras can be great for large breasts if you keep a few things in mind. First, support: Back closure bras typically offer a little more support because the front center panel of the bra (the “gore,” if you’re using the technical term) can give the garment a little more integrity. Front-closure designs may not have that, namely if you’re dealing with a push-up bra or a plunge. Those styles might leave large-breasted wearers more prone to bounce or spillage, so if you’re worried about that, you might either want to check out a full-coverage front-closure bra or just opt for a traditional back-closure bra.

  • How do you wash a bra?

How you wash your bra really depends on the bra. Some bras are entirely machine washable and dryable. Others require hand washing with a certain detergent. We recommend reading the care label on your bra and going from there, but when in doubt, you really can’t go wrong with a good hand wash using a delicates detergent, followed by a lay flat dry. We recommend washing your bras every two to three wears.
